Verdi’s Rigoletto is a tragically ironic tale filled with passion, betrayal, filial love, and vengeance. This timeless work features an impressive array of well-known arias (including the famous La donna è mobile), in which the power of the music underpins the drama of the story.
Rigoletto, a cynical jester who entertains the Duke of Mantua’s court, is also the tender, loving father of young Gilda, whom he jealously protects. When he learns that his daughter has been kidnapped by courtesans and has fallen in love with the duke, a scandalous libertine, Rigoletto hires an assassin to kill the duke and avenge his honour. His plans, however, go horribly awry.
