Some 60 teams square off over the frozen waters of the St. Lawrence River, competing in one of four categories: Elite Men's, Elite Women's, Competitive and Sports. Teams from the Elite Women's and Sports categories must cross the river twice between the Louise Basin in Quebec City and quai Paquet in Lévis. Teams from the Elite Men's and Competitive categories traverse the river three times instead. Races for the Elite Men's and Competitive categories can last up to an hour and thirty minutes according to weather and tide.
The Carnival also offers the Canoe Race Pre-Race Event, where the boaters explain their sport and an analyst offers a live description of their routine. This is your chance to learn more about how the competitors train and prepare for a major race.
