A Uniquely North-American
Heritage

Québec’s founding religious community held tremendous influence over the region’s development. Their contributions have lived on in the substantial number of churches and large-scale religious sites that make up the area.

Churches and Places of Worship

An incredible wealth of religious diversity can be felt in more than 130 churches, 20 chapels, two cathedrals and one basilica, all of which bear witness to the many origins that colonized the region : Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists

The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine

This popular site is home to the annual Sainte Anne Novena. The experience is a deeply moving and spiritual for the thousands of pilgrims who gather here from all over the world in the hopes that their prayers will find a kind ear in the good Sainte Anne.

The Novena is scheduled to begin on July 17, 2010 and will conclude with the Feast Day of Sainte Anne on July 26, 2010.

Religious Communities and Sacred Art

Religious communities played a vital role in building Québec society. Among these, Les Ursulines were committed to education, les Augustines to health, and les soeurs du Bon Pasteur were dedicated to various charitable organizations.

As the centuries went by, many of the communities that settled here devoted themselves to the arts, having brought from their homelands knowledge, skills, and a few works of art as well.

Several museums and religious sites provide an opportunity to rediscover these works and the history that surrounds them:

Sacred Treasures

Shaded from sight in the deepest hollows of the region’s churches and monasteries, a great many treasures have been preserved over the centuries. Today, the Québec region plays host to a veritable treasure hunt of such forgotten marvels.
