The Canadian Institute of Québec was founded in Québec City in 1848 for the purpose of diffusing knowledge and culture. It is responsible for running several libraries, including the main city library (bibliothèque Gabrielle-Roy) and many neighbourhood branches, art galleries, an exhibition hall and a concert hall. The aim of the Maison de la littérature (literature house) project is to give new life to the Salle de L'Institut.
