Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi are the two most often performed operas of Puccini’s celebrated Il trittico (triptych). Moving drama gives way to side-splitting farce in a night running the gamut of human emotions.
Suor Angelica is a powerful multi-hanky drama transcendent by the music Puccini created to frame his young heroine’s tragic destiny.
Sister Angelica is a noblewoman forced by her family to take the veil after giving birth to a child out of wedlock. Seven years have gone by without word from home when her aunt, the Princess, arrives and out of the blue informs her of the death of her son. Angelica’s despair draws her inexorably toward her fate.
Gianni Schicchi, the setting for the iconic aria “O mio babbino caro,” is a larger-than-life comedy showcasing all Puccini’s comic eloquence.
A rich old man, Buoso Donati, has just died in Florence and left all his wealth to a monastery. His outraged relatives call on wily Gianni Schicchi to straighten things out for them. Schicchi obliges by impersonating the deceased and summoning the notary to dictate a new will, but then tricks the relatives and makes himself the main beneficiary.
Sung in Italian with French supertitles
