Drawing on the remarkable collection of Japanese art – one of the most highly regarded in the world – and of European and American painting of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, this exhibition, in its only Canadian presentation, demonstrates the full extent of Western society’s fascination with Japanese culture. This socio-cultural phenomenon, without precedent in art history, gave rise to profound changes in artistic practices.
More than 130 works (pieces in silver and lacquer, paintings, photographs and prints) will draw a portrait of a Western world spellbound by a mythical, dreamlike Orient, admired almost to the point of envy.
