Into India uses the miniature to explore the art produced by the Persian, Central Asian and European leaders and merchants who settled in India from the 12th to the 19th century.
The exhibition presents more than a hundred illuminations of Buddhist, Jain and Hindu manuscripts which illustrated Persian books of poetry and albums documenting the life of the glittering Mogul court or the indigenous flora and fauna. These refined works reveal the remarkable ability of Indian artists to adapt their styles to satisfy the taste of the foreigners who dominated India while maintaining a specifically Indian quality. Into India is an extraordinary introduction to the wealth of traditions and religions in this part of the world.
