E Tu Ake - Maori Standing Strong
November 21, 2012 to September 8, 2013
Everyday • all day
The past is in front of us, the future is behind: the challenge is now. The Maori let the past guide the present and the future embrace the past. They seek to control their world and its resources as stakeholders in their own future. Sovereignty, autonomy, and independence are therefore at the heart of their plans.
This exhibition celebrates the Maori culture by presenting invaluable ancestral treasures, contemporary objects, and works of art. These objects (155) reflect the essence, courage, dignity, and aspirations of the Maori people in a setting that combines the ancient and the contemporary. The exhibition explores three major themes: Whakapapa (ties that bind), Mana (way of being), and Kaitiakitanga (caring and protecting). Produced by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
