Québec, August 16, 2011 – Taking advantage of the increase in bicycle tourism around the world, Québec City Tourism, Tourisme Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, the Véloroute des Bleuets and the Corporation des Cols du Fjord are banding together to create a new, world-class bicycle network.
The network, which will be established in one to two years, will offer sports enthusiasts a network of more than 1,000 kilometres covering the Québec and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean areas.
This project is built on a vision shared by the four partners. It aims to offer a unique product in Canada by becoming the first and only "Brevet" network in North America (participants receive a road book and a stamp at every stage). "We want to develop a world-class cycle tourism offer in Quebec and generate new economic benefits for the regions touched by the network," declared Alain April, Québec City Tourism Chair.
Covering more than 1,000 kilometres with 6,000 metres of elevation gain, this bicycle route will help cyclists discover the St. Lawrence River, the Saguenay Fjord, the Lac Saint-Jean and the numerous tourist attractions along the way. Combined with the Québec international airport, land and marine shuttles to transport luggage, a network of cyclist-friendly certified inns and detailed maps, the project will provide a top-notch sports touring and cycle tourism experience.
Over the next few months, the committee will organize a corporation mandated to establish the route and the development criteria for this project, for an official launch in the next few years.
