Founded in Québec City in 1848 for the purpose of diffusing knowledge and culture, the Canadian Institute of Québec is responsible for running several libraries, including the main city library and many neighbourhood branches, art galleries, an exhibition hall and a concert hall. The CIQ organizes a literary festival (Québec en toutes lettres, to be held from October 10 to 20, 2013), manages Première Ovation (a program to encourage young artists) and is preparing to open a literature centre (Maison de la littérature) in Old Québec in 2014.
