| | Saint-Roch: A New District to Discover
If
your last visit to Québec City was a few years ago, you won’t want to miss the
new Saint-Roch district! Over the years, restaurants, bars and new boutiques
have cropped up, giving a brand new look to one of the oldest suburbs in Québec
City. A 15-minute walk from Old Quebec and close to the Old Port, Saint-Roch is
the ultimate trendy destination for shopping and good eating! In fact, the
neighbourhood is in constant evolution, with the creation of the colourful
Saint-Roch public garden and the recycling of factories and other obsolete
buildings. Come and see for yourself: the results are astonishing!
A simple afternoon of shopping becomes a real pleasure in Saint-Roch. On
Saint-Joseph street, you will come across small boutiques and large stores that
you will not find elsewhere in Québec City. You can wander for hours on end!
During your stroll, you will make many lovely and delicious discoveries: fine
food stores, pastry shops, home decor boutiques and even a tea room.
One of the stores worth mentioning is
Benjo, the greatest toy store in Quebec, as any kid will tell you! There are
games and stuffed toys for all tastes… and what about the entertainment? The
little train that runs through the store, the giant piano and the resto-brico
workshop… simply magical! As for men’s and women’s fashion, the brand new
Hugo Boss boutique is a must-see. Spread over two floors, it’s the only
boutique in Canada to offer this very famous label’s entire line of men’s and
women’s fashions and accessories. No other shopping centre offers as much!
Since all your errands can be done on foot, you will surely develop an appetite.
Like the trendy boutiques, the restaurants and bars in the area are thoroughly
modern… from their menu to their decor. Try
YUZU Sushi-Bar for its sushi and other daring dishes in a modern Japanese
setting. Unless you have a penchant for
Café du Clocher Penché? This bistro features unpretentious but very tasty
cuisine. And if you are looking for a hip place to have a drink at the end of
the day, the
Boudoir Lounge Resto-Club and its terrace have a stylish decor and an
innovative design that lies somewhere between the East and the West. Lovers of
craft beer will want to quench their thirst at
La Barberie, a microbrewery that has become a neighbourhood institution.
Saint-Roch
is also the ideal place for holiday shopping. The neighbourhood has the most
festive atmosphere in the city! From late November to early January,
Saint-Joseph street is illuminated by a magnificent ceiling of blue lights! Add
the tallest Christmas tree in Québec City (50 feet!) and you get a magical
winter setting. The nativity scene displays in the shop windows and the must-see
toy
parade will impress young and old alike!
Lastly, in summer 2007 important works will be carried out on what is left of
Saint-Roch Mall. Once phase 2 of the roof removal of the former covered mall is
completed, you will be able to shop for your Christmas gifts on the longest
street in the world to sparkle under a ceiling of lights. Nothing less!
