Overview of the Greater Québec Area

The Greater Québec Area is the history of a unique people - strong and proud of its Amerindian, French and British roots. Discover the Greater Québec Area which includes the Communauté urbaine de Québec, Côte-de-Beaupré, Île d'Orléans, Jacques-Cartier and Portneuf.

The Communauté urbaine de Québec includes 13 municipalities. While wandering through Vieux-Québec and its surroundings, the historic districts in Charlesbourg, in Beauport, in Cap-Rouge, and Wendake, an interesting blend of the past and the present is offered to visitors. Discover the many museums and historic houses, the Parliament, the Citadelle, the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency (falls), the zoo and the aquarium, as well as the festivities such as the Québec International Summer Festival and the Winter Carnival.

Plenty to do and to visit on Côte-de-Beaupré! Buildings and sites of historical and achitectural interest including many museums. The Basilica and the Cyclorama attract many pilgrims. Outdoor activities: golf, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, etc. Don't miss Mont Sainte-Anne area, its falls and beautiful trails.

Tour the île d'Orléans (island) and discover its architecture, history and heritage, roots families. Enjoy farm-produce industry (apple and strawberry picking, wine, maple products, fishing ponds).

A paradise for outdoor activities in Jacques-Cartier area! Alpine or cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, winter sliding, water sports, rafting, nature observation, snowmobiling, etc.

Many day-trips to choose from in Portneuf County. History and architectural heritage, museums, parks, falls... From resort to outdoors activities, golfing to snowmobiling, along with hunting and fishing.

General Information
  • Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain and also known as the cradle of French civilization.

  • Situated 155 miles (250 km) east of Montréal (a 2½ hour drive).

  • Area: 3,475 sq. mi. (9,000 km2).

  • Population of the Greater Québec Area: 601,591 of which 95% are French-speaking; English is widely spoken in all service industries and tourist and shopping areas.

Satisfaction rating: 98% for visitor reception; 99% for safety.
