Portneuf
Riverside,
countryside A few kilometres west of Québec City, stretching some 150
km (95 miles) along the river and more than 200 kilometres (125 miles)
back into the countryside, lies Portneuf and its many charms. Farm and
produce tours are available. It is divided into two distinct regions,
each with its own attractions. The countryside is characterized by wide
open spaces while the riverside displays the area's architectural
heritage along Chemin du Roy.
The countryside of
Portneuf offers a natural panorama of hills, lakes, rivers and
waterfalls. In summer, there is golf, cycling, fishing, hunting,
exploring caves, horseback riding, rafting, canoeing, camping and many
other activities. Try the 68 km long bicycle / snowmobile trail that
links Shannon to Rivière-à-Pierre. In winter, snowmobiling,
cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing are popular.
The Portneuf Wildlife
Reserve, covering some 775 km2 ( 300 mi2 ), offers numerous seasonal
activities. Visitors can study wildlife in its habitat (moose, deer,
wolf, coyote, birds, fish, etc.) and view the caldrons in the
waterfalls, an intriguing geological feature at Marmite Falls.
Amateurs of history
have a front-row seat when they follow the Chemin du Roy. It is the
first road that carried traffic in Canada, linking Québec City and
Montréal, the two major centres of the colony. All along Chemin du Roy,
visitors have a rendez-vous with the past in an ageless setting. The
views over the river alone are worth the visit. Along with its numerous
attractions, the charm of Portneuf is alive in its inhabitants and their
warm welcome. Whether you choose the riverside or the countryside,
Portneuf is enchanting.
