Québec’s
founding religious community held tremendous influence over the region’s development. Their contributions have lived on in the substantial number of
churches and large-scale religious sites take make up the area. They have left us with a legacy of exceptional beauty that is sure to fascinate art enthusiasts,
history buffs, visitors, believers and non-believers alike.
The most popular of these sites remains the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine, home to the annual Sainte Anne Novena. The experience is a deeply moving and
spiritual for the thousands of pilgrims who gather here from all over the world in the hopes that their prayers will find a kind ear in the good Sainte Anne. The
Novena is scheduled to begin on July 17, 2009 and will conclude with the Feast Day of Sainte Anne on July 26, 2009.
From yesteryear’s sacred treasures to the faithful manifestations beheld to this very day, the religious heritage found here continues to inspire contemplation
and reflection. Come and discover, first-hand, the magnificent tableaux and relics, along with a host of other works brought together in various churches
and exhibitions.
Places of Worship An incredible wealth of religious diversity can be felt in more than 130 churches, 20 chapels, two cathedrals and one basilica, all of which bear witness to the many origins that colonized the region. Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists, all have left an indelible mark on the landscape.
Of course, these are just a few of Québec City’s many churches. To learn more, visit the Corporation du patrimoine et du tourisme religieux de Québec’s Web site. The Côte de-Beaupré, Portneuf, and Jacques-Cartier (religious information in French only) Web sites also feature a comprehensive list of churches located throughout the region.
Religious Sites Religious communities played a vital role in building Québec society. Among these, Les Ursulines were committed to education, les Augustines to health, and les soeurs du Bon Pasteur were dedicated to various charitable organizations. As the centuries went by, many of the communities that settled here devoted themselves to the arts, having brought from their homelands knowledge, skills, and a few works of art as well. Many of these pieces have remained. Several museums and religious sites provide an opportunity to rediscover these works and the history that surrounds them:
