Graceful living in the European tradition
Québec City’s striking beauty and history offer an authentic taste of Europe in the heart of the continental Northeast. Here, past and present blend seamlessly in Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage Treasure. With its timeless architecture, cobblestone streets, and countless antique shops and museums, the Old Town offers an extraordinary cultural experience. Québec City-the only walled city in
North America-is an adventure in itself, especially during the festival season. It's as if the whole city were a stage, with a surprise around every corner. The
SAQ New France Festival (August
5 to 9), a unique journey back to the French Regime during the 17th and 18th centuries, will be at the top of the list for history buffs. For lively, fun-filled days, lose yourself in non-stop concerts, shows, food tastings, and costume parades.
Québec City's heritage comes to life all year round, even after the festival has ended. The birthplace of French civilization in North America, Place Royale is simply bustling in summertime with the historical reenactments and special events and activities taking place there. And the same is true for Quartier Petit-Champlain, right nearby.
Historically important in the development of Canada as well as North America, Québec City is home to three National Historic Sites of Canada: the
Fortifications of Québec,
Artillery Park
and the
Cartier-Brébeuf Park. And to top it all off, there's
Battlefields Park, one of the most prestigious city parks in the world and the site of two famous battles in 1759 and 1760, as well as the Québec Bridge National Historic Site of Canada. From a more recent history, you won’t want to miss three of the region’s landmarks: the star-shaped
Citadelle (the eastern flank of Québec’s fortifications),
Hôtel du Parlement (the Parliament Building, where the National Assembly and its 125 elected members for the province of Québec meet), and the world-famous
Château Frontenac, erected in 1893 and photographed by millions. An interesting way to discover the richness of Québec City’s heritage is through the colorful murals evoking four centuries of fascinating history in the storied Lower Town. Of course, a wealth of
museums are waiting to be discovered, and nearby towns and villages have plenty to offer, too. Historic churches and stately heritage homes are just some of the surprises you may find around the next bend in the road.
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica, enchanting Île d'Orléans, the Wendake community (home of the only Huron-Wendat Nation in Canada), as well as the villages of Cap-Santé, Neuville, and Deschambault in Portneuf are just a few places you might want to visit. So if you’re looking for a mixture of vitality and tradition, look no further than Québec City, a delightful haven of Old World charm—just 2 1/2 hours from Montréal.
